Osteoarthritis (Bone Loss) Treatment

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease, also known as osteoporosis. This condition is characterized by the wear and tear of the bones, cartilage and other tissues that make up the joints over time. Causes of osteoarthritis can include aging, overweight, genetic factors, repetitive joint injuries, joint inflammation and hormonal changes.

Osteoarthritis usually occurs in specific areas, most commonly the knees, hips, hands and spine are affected. This disease begins with the weakening and wear of the articular cartilage. Cartilage is a tissue that protects the bones in the joints, reduces friction and provides flexibility. However, in the case of osteoarthritis, the cartilage weakens, becomes thinner, and may even disappear completely. In this case, the bones come into direct contact with each other, causing symptoms such as pain, swelling, and restriction in joint mobility.

The aim of the treatment of osteoarthritis is to relieve symptoms, reduce pain, increase joint mobility and improve quality of life. Treatment usually requires a multidisciplinary approach and includes a variety of methods. Below are some of the methods used to treat osteoarthritis:

Medications: Medications such as pain relievers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and corticosteroids can be effective in reducing pain and inflammation.
Physical therapy: Physiotherapists can apply exercise programs and manipulation techniques to increase joint mobility, strengthen muscles, and reduce pain.
Exercise: Low-impact aerobic exercises, resistance exercises to strengthen muscles, and stretching exercises are recommended for people with osteoarthritis. These exercises increase joint mobility and reduce pain.
Weight management: Being overweight can exacerbate osteoarthritis symptoms. Therefore, it is important to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.
Supportive devices: Supportive devices such as special shoes, canes, walkers, and knee pads can be used to stabilize the joint and balance the load.
Alternative treatments: Alternative treatment methods such as acupuncture, massage therapy, and herbal supplements may relieve pain in some people, but more research is needed on their effectiveness.

Osteoarthritis is an incurable disease, but it is possible to control symptoms with proper management and treatment. The treatment plan is usually tailored to the individual and it is important to cooperate with your doctor. Also, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and avoiding stress can also help in osteoarthritis management.
